في أحد أبرد مواسم الصيف وأكثرها رطوبة، يقرر بولي وديغوري باستكشاف عليّة البيت القديم الطويل. فيسيران بحرص على العوارض ويزحفان عبر ذلك الممر المعتم الذي يصل بيتيهما بالبيت الفارغ الواقع بعدهما. ماذا سيجدان؟ هل يكون بيتاً مسكوناً بأرواح شريرة؟ بل ربما يكتشفان عصابة من المجرمين اليائسين! وعلى كل حال، لا بد أن هنالك سراً ما!
ويبدو أنهما أُحبِطا حين رأيا أن الغرفة التي دخلاها صدفة هي غرفة عمل "أندرو" خال ديغوري. ولكن خينما يجري اختباراً غريباً يجعل بولي به تختفي حالاً من العالم، يصير من الواضح أن الصيف الممل سيتحول إلى مغامرة مثيرة تماماً وغريبة.
