يتناول هذا الكتاب مرحلة كاملة من تاريخ الحركة الوطنية الفلسطينية المعاصرة، من قيام دولة إسرائيل سنة 1948 حتى عقد اتفاق أوسلو بين منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية وإسرائيل سنة 1993. وخلافاً للأطروحات المعهودة، يؤكد الكتاب مركزية فكرة بناء الدولة في ظهور المؤسسات السياسية لمنظمة التحرير وتطورها، حتى في غياب القاعدة الجغرافية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية المستقلة؛ ويظهر ذلك من خلال تتبع ا يتناول هذا الكتاب مرحلة كاملة من تاريخ الحركة الوطنية الفلسطينية المعاصرة، من قيام دولة إسرائيل سنة 1948 حتى عقد اتفاق أوسلو بين منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية وإسرائيل سنة 1993. وخلافاً للأطروحات المعهودة، يؤكد الكتاب مركزية فكرة بناء الدولة في ظهور المؤسسات السياسية لمنظمة التحرير وتطورها، حتى في غياب القاعدة الجغرافية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية المستقلة؛ ويظهر ذلك من خلال تتبع التطور السياسي والعقائدي والتنظيمي لـِ م.ت.ف. وللفصائل الفدائية المسلحة المنضوية تحت لوائها. وإذ يتمحور ذلك التطور حول موضوعة "الكفاح المسلح"، فإنه يظهر كيفية استخدام حالة الصراع والمواجهة من أجل تعبئة وحشد قاعدة جماهيرية، وتحقيق هيمنة مفاهيم ومصطلحات محددة للثورة والوطنية، وبناء المؤسسات الدولانية، وتأكيد شرعية طبقة سياسية ونخبة بيروقراطية جديدتين. هذا، ويستند الكتاب إلى أرشيفات م.ت.ف.، وإلى الوثائق الداخلية والمطبوعات الرسمية لمختلف الفصائل الفدائية، وإلى ما يزيد على 400 مقابلة أجراها المؤلف مع أعضاء وكوادر وضباط م.ت.ف. وفصائلها.
