قد عُدّت علاقة الدّين بالعلم من أعرق الإشكاليات الفلسفيّة، وأقواها أثراً في رقيّ الأمم وتخلّفها. ولم تكن الثّقافة العربيّة بمنأى عن تبعات إثارتها؛ فشغلت رجال الفكر والأدب، وكانت المجلات الثّقافيّة مسرحاً خصباً لتطارحها، وأدّت المقالات المحرّرة فيها إلى مساجلات كلاميّة، ومجادلات فكريّة. يسعى الكتاب للإجابة عن السؤال: هل المجتمع العربي قادر، حقّاً، على أن يصنع حداثته، بعد أن قد عُدّت علاقة الدّين بالعلم من أعرق الإشكاليات الفلسفيّة، وأقواها أثراً في رقيّ الأمم وتخلّفها. ولم تكن الثّقافة العربيّة بمنأى عن تبعات إثارتها؛ فشغلت رجال الفكر والأدب، وكانت المجلات الثّقافيّة مسرحاً خصباً لتطارحها، وأدّت المقالات المحرّرة فيها إلى مساجلات كلاميّة، ومجادلات فكريّة. يسعى الكتاب للإجابة عن السؤال: هل المجتمع العربي قادر، حقّاً، على أن يصنع حداثته، بعد أن ظلّ، لقرنين من الزّمن، متردّداً بين مشاريع تحديثيّة مختلفة، ومسارات إصلاحيّة متناقضة؟ لهذا أبحر المؤلف في تاريخ الصّحافة العربيّة لقرنين من الزمن، يرصد الأفكار والذّهنيّات، محاولاً إقامة المقارنات بين المجلات حديثها ومعاصرها، دينيّها وعلميّها، مغربيّها ومشرقيّها، إسلاميّها ومسيحيّها، مع الوقوف على المناهج المتّبعة، وحدود النّتائج المتوصّل إليها، في ما له علاقة بـالدّين والعلم. ووقف على أهمّ السّجالات الكلاميّة الخاصة بفكرة «الخالق بين الدّين والعلم». كما رصد المسائل العقديّة، التي أُثيرت بين أنصار العلم وأنصار الدّين، حول وجود الملائكة، والحياة بعد الموت، ويوم القيامة، واحتفى، أيضاً، بـفكرة الإعجاز العلمي، فهي من جوهر إيمان المؤمن بالكتب السّماويّة، وحاول الإلمام بأهمّ القضايا المُفتى فيها في المجال الطّبّي، وقيّم بعض المقارنات بين المسائل المفتى فيها. كما سعى للتّأسيس لمشروع تحديثي يحاول، جاهداً، الإفادة من الدّين والعلم إفادةً واعيةً وعقلانيّةً لا عفويّة انفعاليّة، خدمةً للثّقافة العربيّة المعاصرة، والإنسان العربي المجسّد لمقوّماتها.
