موضوع هذا الكتاب- فلسفة الحب في تطورها التاريخي. وهو يبحث في نشوء التصورات الأولى عن الحب وطبيعته ومعناه في سياق الفكر الفلسفي الأوروبي، بدءاً بالفكر الإغريقي وانتهاء بالثقافة الأوروبية المعاصرة، وتأثيرات هذه التصورات على الأخلاق، والفلسفة وعلم الجمال، والأدب والشعر والفن. إن فلسفة الحب هي علم قديم، والحب موضوع خالد، كان دوما موضع اهتمام الإنسان. إنه مسألة فلسفية هامة ومعق موضوع هذا الكتاب- فلسفة الحب في تطورها التاريخي. وهو يبحث في نشوء التصورات الأولى عن الحب وطبيعته ومعناه في سياق الفكر الفلسفي الأوروبي، بدءاً بالفكر الإغريقي وانتهاء بالثقافة الأوروبية المعاصرة، وتأثيرات هذه التصورات على الأخلاق، والفلسفة وعلم الجمال، والأدب والشعر والفن. إن فلسفة الحب هي علم قديم، والحب موضوع خالد، كان دوما موضع اهتمام الإنسان. إنه مسألة فلسفية هامة ومعقدة، مثلها مثل معنى الحياة، والموت والخلود. والحب وثيق الصلة بالأخلاق وعلم الجمال وعلم النفس، فالحب من أسمى العواطف الإنسانية وأقواها وأشملها. وقد أدركت الفلسفة الأوروبية الصلة الوثيقة التي تربط بين الحب والمعرفة، وعلى أساس هذه الصلة ولدت نظرية الإيروس الأفلاطوني، حيث ينظر إلى الحب كطريق إلى "المعرفة الإيروسية"، كعروج إلى الحقيقة، إلى قيم الوجود الإنساني الشمولية. ويتناول الكتاب مفهوم الحب عند كبار المفكرين والفلاسفة والفنانين بدءاً بأفلاطون وانتهاء بالفلاسفة والمفكرين الأوروبيين المعاصرين. إن فلسفة الحب جزء لا يتجزأ من حياة أوروبا الروحية والثقافية، وإن الإطلاع على مراحل تطور الحب وأفكاره الرئيسة، ورموزه وصوره، والأعمال الفلسفية الفنية والأدبية المكرسة لموضوع الحب يسمح بفهم أعمق لخصائص هذه الثقافة وخصوصيتها.
