افتتح الشيخ صالح كتابه بقوله: (ليس من الصواب أن يكرر الإنسان أعمال الآخرين، فيشغل نفسه وغيره بما لا جديد فيه.. وهو بذلك يضيع وقته وأوقات الآخرين).
- ( والعمل الذي نقدمه اليوم ليس من هذا الباب، وليس هو مختصرا آخر يضاف إلى قائمة المختصرات الكثيرة التي وضعت لكتاب الإحياء).
- (ولكنه الإحياء نفسه في صورة مصغرة)
- ( لها ما للصورة الكبيرة وفيها ما فيها من المعالم والظلال).
- ( بل قد افتتح الشيخ صالح كتابه بقوله: (ليس من الصواب أن يكرر الإنسان أعمال الآخرين، فيشغل نفسه وغيره بما لا جديد فيه.. وهو بذلك يضيع وقته وأوقات الآخرين).

- ( بل قد بذل الجهد في تنقيتها من المشوهات، فزال بذلك الغبش الذي اكتنف بعض جوانبها..)
- ويذكر الشيخ الشامي اقتراح العلامة القرضاوي في كتابه (الغزالي بين ماديحه وناقديه) بأن (يختصر الكتاب يبقى على روحه وحرارته والفوائد العلمية والتربوية ويحذف التجازوزات…)
ويقول الشيخ الشامي: (إن اقتراح الدكتور القرضاوي أخذ مكانة من نفسي.. ووجدت صدري منشرحاً للقيام بهذا العمل).
ثم ختم بالمواصفات المطلوبة في المهذب، وهي:
❊ حذف الأحاديث الموضوعة والضعيفة وما بني عليها من فكر.
❊حذف أغاليط الصوفة وترهاتهم.
❊ حذف المبالغات والتجاوزات. ❊ الإبقاء على روح الكتاب وحرارته.
❊ الإبقاء على حرارته العلمية والتربوية.
❊ الحفاظ على شكل الكتاب وهيكله العام كما وضعه مصنفه، بحيث تبقى كتبه الأربعون، فلا يلغى منها شيء ، ولا يدخل كتاب في كتاب آخر، كما فعل بعض مختصري الإحياء.
وعن النص المهذب يقول: (كتابته بعد سبكه دون تدخل في تغيير نص المصنف إلا بحدود الضرورة كالحرف الذي يربط جملة بأخرى)
