تركز النظريات التربوية الحديثة على أهمية الجدة في عملية التعلم المبكر، وتشير إلى أن أفضل الأوقات للتعلم عند الأطفال هو عندما يكون عالم المحسوسات جديداً بالنسبة لهم، يستقطب جل اهتمامهم، ويدفعهم إلى التساؤل عن هذا وذاك، وهذه الرغبة دفعت المؤلف إلى وضع كتابه"العد والأرقام". فهو يدخل الطفل باكراً إلى عالم الحساب فيتعلم الأرقام من 1إلى 10: يفهم دلالتها، يعدها بالتسلسل المنطقي، ويميز بينها، كل ذلك بواسطة صور جميلة قريبة جداً إلى قلبه. فالرقم (1) مثلاً مجسد بصورة حصان فاز في السباق، والرقم (2) يمثل صورة زرافتين تأكلان غصناً أخضر. في هذا الكتاب يعتاد الطفل النظر إلى الأمور نظرة دقيقة فيميز بين الألوان: الأصفر والأزرق والأحمر... والأشكال كالدوائر والمكعبات ويصل إلى التمييز والربط بين المجموعات الجامدة، والمجموعات المتحركة. مع كتاب "العد والأرقام" هذا، لم يعد الحساب رموزاً جافة مجردة بعيدة عن عقل الطفل، وإنما اكتسي الرقم ثوباً وشكلاً وحياة تقرب الطفل منه فيتمتع بع ويسعى إلى معرفته.
