هذا الكتاب يقدم أولاً سرداً للوقائع والأحداث التي مر بها العميد الركن حطيط أثناء قيامه بهذه المهمة الشاقة والمضنية. ثم يتبعه المؤلف ثانياً بتحليل للوقائع هذه على ضوء القانون الدولي والعلم العسكري ليبين مدى خطورة ما واجه من فعل أوجب قراراً كان عليه أن يتخذه في حينه. ذلك أن الجيش الإسرائيلي حاول الاحتفاظ ببعض المكاسب في الأرض اللبنانية فوضع عند كل تلة أو منحدر أو صخرة أو شجرة، فخاً ليكسب منه بضعة كيلومترات مربعة أو حتى بضعة أمتار مربعة وصلت في بعض الحالات إلى أقل من مترين من أرض لبنان.
لكن الدقة العلمية والضمير المهني العالي المستوى الذي يتميز بهما العميد الركن حطيط أفشلت المناورات الإسرائيلية ولم تعط حظاً، ولم توفر فرصة لنجاح أي تدخل لمصلحة إسرائيل... وبالدقة العلمية والموضوعية ذاتها عرض الكاتب لهذه الأحداث في كتابه، مما وضع الكتاب في موضع المرجع العلمي الضروري لكل من يريد أن يخوض في الكتاب عن هذا الموضوع.
ولعل أجمل ما في هذا الكتاب هي المقاربة التي استعملها الكاتب للقفز فوق الألغام الموضوعة بإتقان من مادية ومعنوية. وقد قفز فوتها كلها مما أدى إلى استعادة لبنان مساحات شاسعة من أرضه تجاوزت السبعة عشر مليون متراً مربعاً كانت ستطيع لو لم يكن الحرص اللبناني أقوى من المناورات الإسرائيلية... ناهيك عن التأكيد أن الخط الأزرق الذي رسم إبان تلك المرحلة هو ترتيب عملي وأن الحدود بين لبنان وفلسطين التي تحتلها إسرائيل هي الحدود الدولية المكرسة بموجب اتفاقية بوليه-نيوكمب المرسمة للحدود بين لبنان وفلسطين سنة 1923... وهذه الحدود التي تم التأكيد عليها في اتفاقية الهدنة بين لبنان وإسرائيل سنة 1949... وبهذه المقاربة حول الكاتب، الملل الذي كان من الممكن أن ينتاب القارئ عند المرور في مسلسل من سرد الوقائع والأحداث، إلى نزهة ممتعة مليئة بالحيوية والصراع، تتخللها محطات وجدانية وقانونية قاطعة ذات فائدة كبرى لكل دبلوماسي يدخل عالم التفاوض، ولكل مسؤول يريد استراتيجية توصله إلى الربح الحقيقي الأكيد وليس إلى التنازل والتفريط والخسارة.
