تقع أحداث الرواية فى لبنان وتبين الفجوة الإجتماعية في قرية ريفية بين عائلتين: مشايخ "آل الجوري" وفلاحي "آل الشميساني"، وكيفية استغلال المحتل التركي لتلك الفجوة واللعب على التناقضات بين العائلتين. و-مناصرة التركي لمشايخ آل الجوري ليس حباً بهم بل لإزكاء نار الصراع فيما بينهم.
وكذلك-نفوذ عنصري الأمن التركيين الملقبين بـ"البطلين" حيث يفوق نفوذهما وسلطتهما سلطة شيخ تل الباز نفسه ويعيثان فساداً في القرية دون حسيب أو رقيب وهما من اغتصبا مريم الشميساني وتسببا في رحيلها ورحيل زوجها عن القرية إلى تركيا. وباكار من الادهاش يتناول-استقواء المشايخ بالمحتل، ومحاولة أحد المشايخ لتغيير الوضع لإنصاف الفلاحين ولكنه لم يفلح ودفع الثمن.
