انحرفت عملية السلام الفلسطينية-الإسرائيلية إلى منحى خطير مع انتخاب آرييل شارون ولجوء الفلسطينيين إلى المقاومة المسلحة، بعد أن استمرت تلك العملية عشر سنوات دون أن تؤدي إلى تحقيق السلام. ومن المهم للغاية أن يتم تحليل الأسباب الكامنة وراء هذا الوضع المأساوي؛ لأنه إن عاجلاً أو آجلاً سيتم استئناف المفاوضات، كما يجب استنباط الدروس والعبر من هذا الإخفاق. ويذهب المؤلف في هذه الدراسة إلى استنتاج أن إسرائيل وليس الفلسطينيين هي التي تتحمل النصيب الأكبر من المسؤولية، ليس عن الانهيار الأخير للعملية السلمية فحسب، بل عن سائر مجريات الصراع الإسرائيلي-الفلسطيني منذ عام 1948. وقد أسهمت المساعدات الاقتصادية والعسكرية الأمريكية، ومعها الدعم السياسي والدبلوماسي شبه اللامحدود لإسرائيل، في تمكين إسرائيل من تجاهل المصالح والمطالب المشروعة المتصلة بالعدالة الأخلاقية للفلسطينيين، وكذلك تجاهل الرأي الدولي. كما أسهم أيضاً الدعم الأمريكي الملحوظ وغير الحكيم لإسرائيل في نزاعها مع الفلسطينيين في تمكين إسرائيل من تجاهل مصالحها.
