تبدأ "خيوط الظلام" بمشهد شديد المأسوية؛ أطفال مدرسة يجرفهم تيار الوادي الهائج أثناء عودتهم إلى بيوتهم، لم يبق من تلك الزهرات سوى زهرة واحدة، عبد الرؤوف، كان عليها أن تشهد المأساة لتحكيها، لم يكن أهل القرية يطلبون أكثر من جسر على الوادي، ولكن الدولة تأخرت عليهم به بعد أن استغرقت في سياسة الإهمال القاتل. تحكم المأساة كل "خيوط الظلام" انطلاقاً من لحظة تأسيس الخيبة تلك، وكل ما عدا ذلك تفصيل محايداً هنا، ولا ينقل الأحداث ببرود المؤرخ، وهو ما يعمق الشعور بالمرارة أكثر. هنا الخيبة مباشرة، تعصف بكل صلفها بجيل كامل. في بقية الرواية، لا يفعل الشاهد سوى لعق جراحه وجراح قريته - بلاده المكلومة. يثأر المؤلف هنا لكل الذين أجبروا على الصمت زمناً طويلاً، ويحاول إعادة تشكيل وعيه بالزمن الوطني، محترزاً مما حقنتنا به الدعاية الرسمية طيلة أزيد من عقود ثلاثة. المؤلف نموذج هنا عن فشل تلك الدعاية، فها هو يناقضها وينسفها في مواقع عديدة ويضع كل شيء موضع الشك والتساؤل، لا بل يصوغ مساراً مختلفاً للأحداث يقلب كل شيء رأساً على عقب، وهو يقوم بذلك بكل حرية ويسر، فهو ليس مؤرخاً وإنما مبدع نص أدبي.
