فتى في العاشرة من عمره يختطفه جنود الخزناوية ليقرؤه سورة الفيل، ومنذ ذلك الحدث الجلل تغيرت حياته تماماً، الحدث الذي بدأت تفاصيله بقراءة سورة الفيل. وفي اليوم التالي كان الخزناوية يجرونه مع رفيقيه نحو السجن "القبو" أصيب الفتى بداء الصمت بعد ذلك الحدث وبالذهول وقت أن وجد نفسه مع رفيقيه في القبو المسكون بالروائح المقززة، لم يعرف وقتها أن ترديد آيات تلك السورة بصوت مرتفع في الوقت الذي كان فيه الوالي الضخم يعبث بحلقة الخضار سيجعلهم يتلقون تلك الصفعات وذلك البصاق المتبوع بالشتائم من نوع "تسخرون من مولانا يا كلاب" "تسخرون من مولانا يا حمير". في هذه الرواية نجح الروائي في نبش التاريخ والعودة الى زمن ما قبل الحداثة لنشهد معه مرحلة مفصلية عاشتها بلاد الحجاز في أوائل ومنتصف القرن الرابع عشر الهجري، حينما كان الحجاز لا يزال تحت وطأة الحكم التركي، وكان أمير مكة، يختار من الآستانة ويعينه سلطان الدولة بمرسوم، ولكن الإشراف الفعلي على البلاد بين الوالي العثماني. وكان للخلاف بين أمير مكة في ذلك الحين وبين الوالي العثماني، آثاره السلبية على الأهالي، حيث أنشئت فرقة إرهابية تسمى "الخزناوية" كانت تقوم بأعمال تعسفية ضد الأهالي ولا يجرأ أحد على الشكوى منهم. وفي العمل تتوالى الحكايات والأحداث، وينتقل الراوي من حكاية الى أخرى مما كان يحدث في حارات مكة أو على أطرافها من قصص أو ما يتناقله البعض من أخبار عن بعض المعارك التي كانت تدور بين عسكر الوالي وبين بعض البدو المتمردين الى آخر ذلك من حكايات تشير الى أن صوت الوالي هو الصوت الوحيد في المجتمع في تلك الفترة من الزمن، ولكن يبدو أن بوادر ثورة وتغيير بدأت في الحجاز عندما يقرر أعيان مكة وعلماؤها، وأهل جدة ووجهاءها، بإجماع الرأي، مبايعة السلطة عبد العزيز بن عبد الرحمن الفيصل آل سعود ملكاً على الحجاز.
