كان لانهيار السلطنة العثمانية - التي رآها البعض دولة الخلافة الإسلامية- عام 1924 عدد من النتائج كان أبرزها فقدان المرجعية الكبرى للمسلمين على المستويين الفكري والسياسي متمثلاً في الدولة والنظام السياسي. وقد دفع ذلك الفراغ حماسة وطموح بعضهم للاجتهادات الشخصية والجماعية بهدف إحياء جماعة المسلمين والخلافة الإسلامية. وقد جاءت نشأة جماعة الإخوان المسلمين، وتناميها سريعاً بين عامي 1928 و1954 في هذا السياق التاريخي والسياسي، كمثال نموذجي على ذلك الطموح. وعززت الجماعة حضورها بقدرتها على الوصول إلى الشرائح المجتمعية كافة بعد أن ارتكزت في انطلاقتها على فهم واسع لمفهوم التدين بالدين الإسلامي ولمهام أتباعه لخّصه حسن البنا المرشد الأول للجماعة بأن "الإسلام هو عبادة وقيادة، ودين ودولة، وروحانية وعمل، وصلاة وجهاد، وطاعة وحكم، ومصحف وسيف لا ينفك واحد من هؤلاء عن الآخر". وعليه، فإنه يمكن الجزم بأن أهداف البنا لم تكن صغيرة للحظة واحدة، بل هي كبيرة وطموحة منذ اليوم الأول لجماعته، والتي تمت ترجمة طموحها إلى إجراء عملي بإعلان الجماعة دخولها المعترك السياسي خلال انعقاد مؤتمرها الخامس في يناير 1939.
