بين دفّتي هذا الكتاب قصة حقيقية لإمرأة تدعى ماتيلدا وُلدت في بيروت مطلع القرن العشرين، عرَفْت ماتيل، وهذا كان اسم الدلال، الطمأنينة والفرح والرفاه، وما لبثت أن عاشت القهر والعذاب والإزدراء والإغتراب والفقر والقلق، إلى أن عاد إليها الإطمئنان فالترقي الإجتماعي والمهني والسعادة. لعلّ أكثر أحداث هذه الرواية من نسج الخيال، وكذلك الشخصيات وأسماؤهم، لكن ما حصل مع ماتيلدا، في مفاصل أساسية من حياتها هو حقيقي تثبته قصيدة كتبها لها شقيقها مرحباً بها لدى عودتها في زيارة للبنان بعد أكثر من سبعة وثلاثين سنة من الإغتراب عن وطنها وعائلتها. هاجرت ماتيلدا مطأطئة الرأس في العام 1924 إلى الأرجنتين، وعادت في العام 1961 مرفوعة الرأس وموفورة الكرامة، راويةً كل ما حدث معها من ظلم كان خافياً على الأقربين، انطلقت بالكلام عن قصة خطفها، ومن حولها إخوتها وأقاربها وعيالهم يستمعون إليها بتأثر وشغف، ولم تهدأ ولم تستكن إلى أن انفجرت صارخة في وجه الجميع لأنهم احتقروها من دون أن يعرفوا حقيقة ما حصل معها في ذلك اليوم المشؤوم الذي انتهى بزواجها من شخص سيئ الطباع من دينها، ولأنهم ازدروا بها وتخلوا عنها نهائياً عندما تزوجت للمرة الثانية بعد سنوات لأن الزوج الجديد لم يكن من دينها، مع أنه كان شهماً ونبيلاً. إنها حكاية فتاة من لبنان جميلة وذكية، عانت العنف المنزلي والإختلاف الطائفي، أحرقتها شرارات حسد الآخرين، ولم تنفع تدخلات البطريرك الماروني الياس الحويّك في ذلك الحين، في إزالة وصمة العار عنها والتي قلبت حياتها رأساً على عقب...
