لا شك أن عملية صناعة الشخصيات عملية مطولة تبدأ بانتقال الخصائص الوراثية إلى المخلوق الجديد على الحياة بصورة قاطعة من والديه، ومعنى هذا أن الصفات والقوى الموروثة مفروضة على الإنسان، ولا مجال لتعديلها إلا في حدود ضيقة، أما الصفات والقوى المكتسبة فهي من صناعة المجتمع بأجهزته المختلفة وأولها الأسرة والمدرسة والبيئة، ولأجل أن تتكون قوى الشخصية بالصورة المفضلة لا بد من أن تتوفر لها فرص الإشباع المناسب للحاجات الإنسانية المختلفة. ولقد زاد الاهتمام بدراسة الشخصية منذ الثلاثينات من هذا القرن، وحتى الوقت الراهن، زيادة كبيرة، ذلك منذ بداية الاستخدام المنظِّم للتحليل العاملي، ويتضح ذلك من الزيادة المطَّرِدة في كمية البحوث لمنشورة في الدوريات السيكولوجية التي تختص بالشخصية، فضلا عن صدور أَعداد كبيرة من المراجع والكتب عنها. ويكاد يتفق علماء النفس الشخصية المحدَثِين، على أن الشخصية هي نمط سلوكي مركب، ثابت إلى حد كبير، يميِّز الفرد عن غيره من الأفراد، ويتكون من تنظيم فريد لمجموعة من الوظائف والسمات والأجهزة المتفاعلة معاً، والتي تضم القدرات العقلية والانفعال والإِرادة، والتركيب الجسمي الوراثي، والوظائف الفيزيولوجية، والأحداث التاريخية الحياتية، والتي تحدد طريقة الفرد الخاصة في الاستجابة، وأسلوبه المميز في التكيف للبيئة. ومن الطبيعي أن يختلف هذا التنظيم من شخص إلى آخر تماما كما تختلف بصمات أصابعهم، مما يتيح لكل شخصية إثبات تمايزها وذاتيتها، ويجعلها مختلفة وفريدة عن مختلف الشخصيات. وذلك سواء من حيث طريقة التفكير والكلام والتصرف أو السلوك أو من حيث الاستجابة لأحداث الحياة أو ضغوط المواقف الاجتماعية، أو من حيث تفاعل هذه الشخصية مع الآخَرين ومدى قبولهم لها.
