ليس من الصعب على المرء أن يعود بذاكرته خمسة عقود إلى الوراء ولكن من الصعب عليه أن يتذكر دقائق الأحداث التي مرت في تلك العقود المنْصرمة. ولا غرو في هذا إذا ما تذكرنا أن الإنسان قد ينسى كثيراً من عظائم الأمور التي غالباً ما يطويها بساط الزمن، ويغلفها صدأ السنين، وتمحوها نعمة النسيان. ولئن نسيتُ فلن أنسى تلك القصص الحية التي كانت جدتي لأمي ترويها لنا. وتلك الحكايات الجميلة التي كانت والدتي تقصها علينا. وكيف أنساها وقد حُفرت حروفها في أعماق نفسي وذاكرتي، وطُبعت صورها في كياني ووجداني.. وإن نسيتُ نفسي فسوف لن أنسى تلك السهرات الحلوة التي كنا نعيشها في فناء الدار إلى جوار شجيرات الورد والياسمين، وتحت ظلال دالية العنب. هناك في فناء بيتنا العربي أو في المخدع الكبير كنا نتحلق حول جدتي لتقص علينا قصة مرت في حياتها، أو مغامرة بطولية وقفت بها في وجه جنود الأتراك أو الألمان أو الفرنسيين وهم يقومون بجولاتهم التفتيشية عن المجندين الفارين من الخدمة العسكرية (العُصملية)، أو عن الأسلحة المخبأة في البيوت، أو عن الثوار المتوارين عن أنظار السلطة المستعمرة. وإني لأتخيلها الآن كيف كانت تصور لنا المواقف التي تتحدث عنها فتخفض من صوتها تارة وترفعه تارة أخرى، فينتابنا الخوف حين يتحول الكلام إلى همسات نكاد لانسمعها.. ويخيم علينا الصمت المرعب، وفجأة تصرخ بأعلى صوتها كاللبوة إذا ما دنا منها خطر لتذود عن عرينها وتحمي صغارها.. فترتد إلينا الروح وتعاودنا الشجاعة، وتخفق قلوبنا الصغيرة من جديد مزهوة بوقفة جدتنا البطلة التي تمتلك من الشجاعة القدر الكبير ومن القوة ما لايمتلكه الرجال. وكنا إذا ما فرغنا من سماع رواية جدتي البطولية التقينا مع قصة يرويها لنا والدي أو حكاية لطيفة تبدأ بها والدتي.
