يشكل كتاب هـ. بركلي مقدمة حقيقية إلى علم الدلالة، ويبدو أنه سيسدُّ فراغاً في المؤلفات التي تعني الأساتذة والطلاب العاملين في ميدان الألسنية، والحقيقة أن اللغة الفرنسية تفتقر حتى الآن، لمثل هذا النوع من المقدمات (الكتب) بالمعنى المعروف للعبارة، فهناك مؤلفات، على الرغم من أهميتها، تركز جلَّ إهتمامها على مجال دلالي معين أو على نظرية معينة مع إنها تعالج علم الدلالة.
من هنا، لم يكن بوسعنا، كأساتذة جامعة، إحالة طلابنا إلى مؤلف أساسي في هذا الميدان ليكون معيناً لهم في دراساتهم، بعد أن احتل علم الدلالة مكانة أساسية في الألسنية كما أنه يقع في مركز العلاقات القائمة بين الألسنية والفلسفة، أو بين المنطق وعلم الألسنة.
إن كتاب هــ. بركلي، في الواقع، نصِّ تقديمي لكن ذلك لا يعني أنه إختزاليّ، وهنا تكمن إستحالة الجمع بين الأمرين، يبين الكتاب بوضوحٍ شديد، تعقيد ما يسمى بعلم الدلالة الألسني sémantique linguistique والذي يعني تاريخياً تلك الإتجاهات التي اهتمَّ بها هذا العلم منذ قيام بريال BREAL بإدخال مصطلح علم الدلالة عند نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، ومنذ أن تمَّ الدمج النظري بين الألسنية والسيميائية sémiotique بشكلٍ عامٍّ.
من هنا، يمكننا، عبر هذا الكتاب الوجيز، فهم صعوبة إعتبار علم الدلالة مجرد علم دلالة معجمية sémantique lexicale تتألف من مكوَّنات القواعد grammaire التي تركز إهتمامها على علم التراكيب syntaxe، كما لا يمكن ردَّه إلى مجموعة من العمليات المرتبطة بظروف الإتصال.
سنجد عبر فصول الكتاب شرحاً مفصلاً للمفاهيم الكلاسيكية لنظرية العلامة signe وقضية المرجع référence والتقابل بين الدال والمدلول... إلخ.
كما سنجد دراسة للطرق الشكلية التي يمكن تطبيقها على الألسن الطبيعية، أو دراسة تطور القواعد التوليدية التحويلية بالقياس إلى علم المنطق وإلى الملفوظية énonciation.
زد على هذا أن الكتاب ليس مجرد عرض لنظريات معينة، إنما يتجاوزه إلى الربط الصارم بين مختلف المنظومات systèmes ومفاهيمها.
