عند قراءة شعر يوسف كومنياكا، يجد القارئ نفسهُ مُتَجوّلاً عبر مزيج من العناصر المُعقّدة التي يحيكها الشّاعر معاً ليخرج بنصّه المُحكَم والمُتَناغم فـي آن. ثمة جُمل شعريّة مُتعدّدة الأشكال والملامح ترقى بنصّ كومنياكا إلى مستوىً مُختلف عن نُظرائه من الشّعراء الأمريكيين المُعاصرين، وخصوصاً تلك القصائد التي تتناول تجارب الشّاعر فـي حرب فـيتنام؛ إذ يُعتبر كومنياكا من أهم الشّعراء الذين كتبوا عن تجاربهم فـي هذه الحرب ذات التأثير الكبير فـي أكثر من جيل من المثقفـين الأميركيين. تتنوع العناصر فـي نص كومنياكا وتتعدد على نحو قد يصدم القُرّاء، حيث تتداخل فترات من حياة الشّاعر لتُكوّن مزيجاً غريباً غير مألوف من الأماكن والأزمنة: فمن حياة الشّاعر الفقيرة على ضفاف نهر بيرل المُتفرّع من الميسسِبّي، إلى تأثّره بحركة الحقوق المدنيّة لمارتن لوثر كينج التي عاصرها فـي شبابه، فذهابه إلى الحرب فـي فـيتنام، وجولاته بعد ذلك سواءً داخل الولايات المتّحدّة الأمريكيّة بتنوّعاتها الغريبة، أو خارج بلاده وتحديداً فـي إفريقيا، وزمن التّمييز العنصري فـي جنوب إفريقيا، مروراً بآسيا، وصولاً إلى مناطق مُتعدّدة من أستراليا.
