قال البعض أنَّ شيفيلدز قُتل· آخرون زعموا أنه ماتَ فوق سرج حصانه بعد إصابته بسكتة قلبيّة بينما ينقِّب عن الذهب في مئات الأنهار المتساقطة من بحيرات الأنديان· بصرف النظر عن سبب الوفاة، فلقد عُثر على جسده بواسطة سائقي بِغال بعد عدة أسابيع· يبلغ طوله ستة أقدام ويَزِنُ أكثر من 100 كيلو، وكانت النسور بما فيها نسور الكوندور الأميركيّة الضخمة قد تَغَذَّت عليه· اخترقت ملابسه الشتوية السميكة لتصلَ إلى الأحشاء وعَرَّت الجثة، غير مُبقيّة سوى على المسدسين في يديه· هكذا عرفَ سائقو البِغال أنَّ الهيكل العظمي هيكله هو· وبحسب الأصول المرعيّة عند رجالٍ منعزلين يرتحلون وحدهم، قاموا بتغطيّة البقايا بالحجارة· بقيت العظام هناك عند نهر لاس ميناس حتّى عام 1959، حين قررَ واحدٌ من أبنائه الـ 12 الذين أنجبهم من ماريا بيتشوين، وهي هنديّة فطريّة مابوتشيّة لا يزال اسمها يُرعب السكّان المحليين، أن ينقلها إلى المقبرة في إل بولسيون· -
