أسهم سعيد، بصورة جوهريَّة، في صياغة النقاشات المعاصرة الدائرة حول الاستشراق، وتحليل الخطاب، والسياسات المضادَّة، ودراسات ما بعد الكولونياليَّة· ولقد أمضى المفكر الفلسطيني الشطر الأكبر من حياته منفيَّاً ومبعداً عن وطنه، فامتلك وعياً كبيراً بالدور الذي اضطلعت به الإيديولوجيَّات المهيمنة في دعم الإمبرياليَّة الثقافيَّة· يرى سعيد أن دراسة الشرق غَدَت فرعاً معرفيَّاً مقدّراً، بالتزامن مع بلوغ المد الاستعماري في القرن التاسع عشر أقصى ذراه· وقد شادت المؤسسة الاستشراقيَّة بناءً معرفيَّاً كان بمقدور الإمبرياليين استثماره لحيازة السلطة· ويستنطق هذا الكتاب كتابات سعيد ذات الطبيعة الجدلية في سعيها لخلخلة الروايات التاريخيَّة أحاديَّة الاتجاه، كما يُبْرز الكتاب كيف قدمت إسهامات سعيد حول الحاجة الملحة لكتابة تواريخ “التابع”، وتفحّص التواريخ السائدة المشتملة على تحيُّز استعماري، دعماً فكريَّاً لتبيان الصفة الاستعماريَّة وعلاقتها بالصراعات على امتداد المعمورة· ويتصدى “واليا” لبحث تأثيرات المنظرين، الذين تناولوا الثقافة بالدرس، على فكر سعيد· ولاسيما أثر كل من فوكو، وغرامشي، في استخدامات سعيد وتحويراته لمفاهيم السلطة، والمعرفة، والهيمنة· * شيلي واليا يُدَرِّس واليا النظريَّة ما بعد الكولونياليَّة في قسم اللغة الإنجليزيَّة ــ جامعة البنجاب· وهو مؤلف لكتابين : الأول بعنوان : “إيفيلين وو : شاهدةٌ على الانحطاط” والثاني بعنوان “التاريخ والحقيقة”·
