إن الغزو المغولي لبلاد الشام كان (بكل المقاييس) كارثة إنسانية كبرى حيث ساهمت حالة التشرذم والإقتتال الداخلي وتسلط الأغراب في تسهيل دخول المغول إلى بلام الشام وتدمير بناها الحضارية الإنسانية، وذلك بعد أن دمروا العديد من الحضارات الأخرى.
تعرضت بلاد الشام لثلاث غزوات مغولية رئيسية هي حملات هولاكو وغازان وتيمورلنك، وكان ما زاد في صعوبة الموقف وجود الصليبين المحتلين لجزء كبير من شاطئ بلاد الشام ونشوء مملكة آرمينية الصغرى في كيليكيا والتي كانت في وقتها جزءاً من بلاد الشام.
