استهوت دراسة الحشرات كثيرا من علماء الأحياء منذ زمن بعيد؛ لصلتها الوثيقة بالإنسان ،إذ بعضها نافه كدودة الحرير ونحل العسل وبعدها الأخر ضاريفتك بالزراعة كديدان القطن والجرد،أو ينقل العلة والمرض كالبعوض والذباب . ولم تترك الحشرات بيئة إلا وكان وفيها نصيب من الحياة ،فعاشت فى الأرض والماء والهواء . وهى عديدة الأنواع،بلغ ما وصف منها حتى الآن ما يقرب من ثلاثة أرباع مليون نوع،ويقدر العلماء أن هناك نحو ضعف هذا العدد لم يكشف عنه العلم بعد. وحياة الحشرات زاخرة كبل ماهو ظريف وعجيب، حتى أن الإنسان ليقف فى كثير من الأحيان مشدوها امام سلوك الحشرات وطبائعها وطرائق حياتها. كيف تطير. وكيف تحس،وكيف تناسل. وكيف تتطفل على غيراها،وكيف يعيش بعضها. كالنمل والنحل. فى مجتمعات بلغت حد الروعة فى دقة نظامها وأحكامها،والعلاقات الاجتماعية التى تسودها. كل ذلك صناعة المؤلف فى أسلوب يتسم بالسلاسة والوضوح،واستشهد فيه بأمثلة كثيرة من الحشرات كما أن وصفه الدقيق للظواهر البيولوجية. واستجلاءه للحقائق العلمية عن حياة هذه الحشرات لما يدعو إلى يدعو الكثير من التأمل ،ويثر فى النفس المته والجمال بما أودعه الله فى هذه الكائنات من قدرات ،وما فى حياتها من غرائب وعجائب. ونأمل أن يساهم هذا الكتاب فى استكمال المكتبة العربية ليحقق الأهداف العلمية والثقافية التى يتطلع إليها العلم.
