لمَ لا نقول دائمًا ما نقصده بشكلٍ مباشرٍ، كان ذلك ليكون أسهل على الجميع؟ وبتلازمٍ، لمَ نسعى، تحت طائلة تكبُّد فائضٍ من "العمل التأويليّ"، إلى كشف النقاب عن المعاني المُستترة وراء السّطور في أقوال الآخرين فضلاً عن المُضمَّنات والأفكار المُبيَّتة والتي تُشكِّل، إنْ جاز التعبير، الأجزاء المغمورة من هذه الأقوال؟ يُحاول هذا الكتاب الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة وإلقاء بعض الضوء على هذا المستنقع المصطلحيّ المؤلَّف من "افتراضاتٍ" و"مُضمَّناتٍ" و"علاقاتٍ تضمينيّةٍ" و"استدلالاتٍ" و"إلماحاتٍ" و"تلميحاتٍ"، وغيرها من المحسنات البيانيّة. كما يُعالج أيضاً موضوع "المُضمَر" ونشأته وما ينتجُ عنه، أي كيف يُبصر النور، وأيّ منحى ينتهجه، فضلاً عن دراسة تكوُّنه ومفاعيله التداوليّة التواصليّة، وكيف يعمد المتكلِّمون إلى استخراج المحتويات المُضمرة من القول وكيفيّة ارتداد هذه الأخيرة على المتكلِّمين أنفسهم. وبهذه الصفة، لا يتوجَّه الكتاب إلى الاختصاصيّين في مجال الألسنيّة وحسب، بل إلى كلِّ مَن يهتمّ بواقع أنَّ للخطابات فعلها المؤثِّر (سواء أكانت هذه الخطابات أدبيّةً أم "عاديّةً"، سياسيّةً أم إعلانيّةً)، وأنَّها تعملُ بجزئِها الأكبر، خفيةً ولكن بشكلٍ فعَّالٍ، بفضل "المحتويات عابرة السبيل المُستَتِرة"، ونعني بها المحتويات المُضمرة، في الخطاب الكلاميّ.
