سْويِنْكا، وول ، شاعر ومسرحي وروائي وناقد نيجيري نال جائزة نوبل للآداب في عام 1986 ، في مسرحياته ورواياته قدم سوينكا نقدًا لاذعًا لمجتمعه جرد فيه ذلك المجتمع من رؤيته الرومانسية الأسطورية لنفسه وحاضره.
ورؤية سوينكا في ذلك رؤية مأساوية أدت به إلى الاصطدام بالأنظمة السياسية في نيجيريا فزج به السجن بين عامي 1967 و1969م.
وقد عبر عن تجربته في السجن بقصائد وأعمال نثرية.
و منها هذه الرواية .
أسهمت كتابات سوينكا النقدية في تعزيز ما يعرف بالدراسات ما بعد الاستعمارية، سعى فيها الأديب و المعارض والمناضل السياسي، المدافع بشراسة عن حقوق الإنسان أياً كان إلى «نحت» هوية حديثة لأفريقيا، أفريقيا الحروب والاضطراب والجوع، ولكن أيضاً أفريقيا الآمال والأحلام...

لقد أخذ هذا الكتاب أشكالًا كثيرة، وفكرت كثيرًا فيما يجب أن يحتويه، وما يجب تأجيله ما الذي يجب أن نمحوه كليًا، وكان هذا كله خاضعًا لمشكلات الملاءمة، قدرتي المستمرة على التأثير في الأحداث داخل بلدي، وفي تحقيق التغيرات الثورية التي أصبحت مكرسًا لها أكثر من أي وقت مضى، وكذلك اعتبارات سلامتي الشخصية، وعدم الرغبة في فك آخر القيود عن نظام يجبره إحساسه بلذنب على البقاء بالقوة في سلطة فاقدة للمصداقية، كل ذلك أدى إلى تغيير الشكل والعنوان، بل وفكرة الكتاب أكثر من مرة، في الأسبوع للقصاص السياسي، وفي هذا الصباح كان العنوان لا يزال "إعدام بطئ دون محاكمة" وفي وقت من هذا الصباح وصلني العنوان الآخر في برقية تحمل الكلمات البسيطة التالية، الرجل مات، في البداية صدمتني صياغة الكلمات، أعطتني رنينا غريبا ثم مألوفا، كمن في ألفتها في نهاية حكاية أخلاقية، يموت الإنسان داخل كل قلب يقف صاحبه صامتا في وجه الطغيان.
