تجرى وقائع هذه القصص فى جليقية، فى جو مشبع بالأساطير، إذ يعتقد الناس فيها بالنظرة، فيصدقونها، ويحاولون أن يتقوا شر العين، ويتعلقون فى حياتهم بالتفاؤل والتشاؤم، ويرسخ ذلك فى أرواحهم تحلقهم فى الليالى حالكة الظلمة شديدة البرودة، حول نيران المواقد للتدفئة، إذ تكثر تعليقاتهم حول السحر، والشياطين، والأرواح المعذبة، ويرددونها، ويزيدون ويعيدون فى تفاصيلها، وعن "حديقة موحشة" ويقول "باي أنكلان": كان عند جدتي بتول طاعنة في السن تسمى ميكائيلا لاجالانا، ماتت وكنت ما زلت طفلاً: أتذكر كيف كانت تقضي الساعات وهي تغزل في فتحة إحدى النوافذ، وكيف أنها تعرف قصصا كثيرة عن قديسين، ونفوس معذبة، وشياطين، ولصوص.
الآن أنا سأحكي تلك القصص التي كانت تحكيها لي، تلك الحكايات كانت تفزعني طوال الليل خلال سنوات طفولتي ولذلك لم يدركها النسيان، ولا تزال من وقت لآخر تلح على ذاكرتي، كما لو أن ريحا صامتة وباردة تمر فوقها، ولها نفس الحفيف لأوراق شجر جافة وساقطة، الحفيف الذي لحديقة عتيقة مهجورة حديقة موحشة.
