يقدم الكتاب الصورة التي لا يعرفها الكثيرون عن لورنس 1885 / 1930 روائياً وشاعراً ورساماً وكاتب مقالات، يتتبع المؤلف بدقة حياة لورنس في مراحلها المختلفة مبيناً تأثير الظروف الإجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية في عصره على تطوير وبلورة أفكاره بأعلام عصره من المثقفين، تناول لورنس في رواياته (أبناء وعشاق، قوس قزح، نساء في الحب، الليدي تشاترلي) أدق الأحاسيس الإنسانية مركزاً على تحليل التدفق الطبيعي الأول من المشاركة الوجدانية بين شخصين قبل أن يكبح أو يسيطر عليه الخوف أو العقل أو التقاليد، ويتفق النقاد أن روايته قوس قزح هي أول أعماله في مجال الرواية الحديثة، عاش لورني معظم حياته بعيداً عن موطنه إنجلترا مخلصاً باستمرار لمبادئه، رافضاً حياة المدن الصناعية القاسية وعلاقاتها الزائفة المتأكلة، وقد عاش حتى النهاية عيشة ناسك بسيط في أحضان الطبيعة البكر التي عشقها، الكتاب غني بالتفاصيل المتعلقة بحياة لورنس في مختلف المدن التي زارها أو أقام فيها وهو الأول الذي يتناول مقتطفات من رسائل لورنس التي لم تكن نشرت قبل عام 1980.
