يتناول هذا الكتاب تراجم الأعلام الذين أدركهم المؤلف، أو لقيهم في حياته، أو أخذ عنهم، أو كانوا في زمنه في جميع أنحاء الخلافة الإسلامية، منذ 696هـ - 764هـ، ويترجم للشعراء والأدباء والعلماء، وكل من كان له شأن، كالسلاطين والأمراء، وقادة الجند، وخدمة المساجد ودور العلم، والكتاب والقضاة. ويرتب الكتاب التراجم ترتيباً معجمياً هجائياً من الألف إلى الياء، ولم يفرد النساء في باب مستقل، بل جاءت تراجمهن القليل في مواضعها من الأحرف. ويتوقف في نهاية كل حرف عند (الأنساب والألقاب)، فيذكر الأعيان الذين اشتهروا بها، والتي تبدأ بهذا الحرف، ثم يذكر أسماءهم موحياً أن تراجمهم في موضعها بترتيب الأسماء، ويبدأ هذا القسم غالباً بعنوان (الألقاب والأنساب) أو (اللقب والنسب). ويذكر الكتاب اسم العلم كاملاً (الاسم والنسب واللقب والكنية)، ثم يصفه بأوصاف تليق به، وتبين مكانته العلمية والاجتماعية ومنزلته بين أقرانه، بعبارات أنيقة بأجمل السجعات، ثم يتحدث عن نشأته، وسيرة حياته وأعماله وشيوخه وتلاميذه، ومؤلفاته، وأشعاره بتعقيب مناسب، ويذكر ما كان دار بينه وبين المترجم له من مساجلات أو معارضات أو مساءلات أو ألغاز. ويفصل القول في أعلام الولاة والأمراء وأولي الشأن وما جرى في أثناء حكمهم أو ولايتهم، فتصبح الترجمة أحياناً تاريخياً يومياً أو شبه يومي لأحداث حياة العلم المترجم له.
