تمبكت»، موضوع هذا الكتاب، مدينه تقع على مسافه اثنى عشر ميلًا من نهر النيجر، ويرجح أن تأسيسها يرجع إلى القرن الخامس الهجرى (الحادى عشر الميلادى) من قبل الطوارق. وقد اختلف نطق اسمها؛ ففى بعض المراجع تكتب( طونبوكتو ) وفى بعضها (تنبكت)، وهو الاسم الذى أطلقه عليها المؤرخ المشهور عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله السعدى فى كتابه تاريخ السودان، ويذكر أنه يعنى المدينه العريقه فى القدم والحضاره.
