يضم هذا الكتاب عدداً من القصص القصيرة التي تشكل روايةً واحدةً سميت باسم إحداها: أسرار الكائنات المضيئة. تتحدث الأسرار عن قضاء أسرةٍ صيفاً حاراً جميلاً وسط كرم القرويين الذين كانوا يجلبون لهم يومياً الحليب والفواكه والخضراوات تعبيراً عن امتنانهم لما فعله عاصم في كشف أسرار المخلوقات النورانية والمساهمة في القبض على بعض اللصوص الذين استغلوا تلك الإشاعات للقيام بسرقاتهم.
وتتحدث الثانية، وهي دائرة الخوف، عن امتزاج الأحلام بالواقع وتداخل الأحلام بالحقائق في صورة شاب نفذ عملية ضد قوات الاحتلال في البلاد المجاورة.
وتأتي الثالثة، طيور الموت، حين يكثر الشر والفساد لتستأصل جذوره، وهي ليست طيوراً عاديةً، وهناك زواحف ليست عاديةً أيضاً تهاجم الأشرار في قبورهم، وتفتك الطيور بالمستغلين المفسدين.
وكانت الرابعة، قهر الأمومة، في قصة امرأةٍ انفصلت عن زوجها وربت طفليها أحسن تربية وعلمتهما أحسن تعليم، ولكن حقد الأب عليها صاغ لهما الأكاذيب فصدقاه وانفصلا عن أمهما التي انهارت، وأدركا الحقيقة فيما بعد ولكن الأم توفيت قهراً، وأصبحا يزوران قبرها يرجوان الغفران.
وكانت الخامسة، تلك الرحى القاسية، تتحدث عن ابن المختار الذي اعترف بتعاونه مع لصوص منظمين يغيرون على القرى فيخدرون القطعان والدجاج، ويبيعونها لشركات الطعام المنتشرة مع شركات أجنبية تقوم باستغلالهم. فيضطر المختار إلى حبس ابنه والتعاون مع أهل القرية على ترميمها.
