يستمد هذا الكتاب الألف بائي من أفكار واقتباسات وحكايات ووقائع وبديهيات وخبايا ومتفرّقات المهندس، تتعلّق بممارسة وتاريخ وثقافة وتقاليد مهنته. وتمثّل مداخله عصارة عقود من القراءة والكتابة والحوار والتفكير في المهندسين والهندسة، تمتدّ من الكتابة النصية الموجزة عن المفاهيم والممارسات المهمة بالنسبة للمهنة إلى قوائم الإنجازات الهندسية الكبيرة. ونُظّم هذا الكتاب ألف بائياً وهو أشبه بقاموس منه بموسوعة، وهو في الوقت نفسه مقتطفات مختارة وكتاب عادي ومرجع. ليس الهدف من هذا الكتاب قراءته من الصفحة الأولى حتى الأخيرة، ولكن الانغماس هنا وهناك بحسب مزاج القارىء، بترتيب أبجدي يدعو للقراءة الاتفاقية. كان الأمل من الكتاب حين وضعه أن يصبح مصدراً يعود إليه القرّاء أولاً عند مصادفتهم لموضوع غامض أو مبهم، إضافة إلى الأقل غموضاً من مواضيع الهندسة.
