انحدرت الشمس إلى مغاربها هاويةً إلى مستقرها لتفسح لليل مكاناً يسدل فيه أستاره، وهي جالسة على أريكة وثيرة بغرفتها والقلق يحُفها من كل جانب، وقد لبسها مسٌ من غيرةٍ حمقاء، تصليها بنارها حتى كادت أن تحرقها، وتتجاذبها خواطر شتى، لا تستهدف غايةً بعينها ولا تجد في عتمة ليلها سراجاً يضئ لها السبيل. وهي لا تدري كيف أصبحت كأنة الحزن تثير في الحشا أناتٍ تختنق بها الحلوق، وتكاد تهمي بالدمع من وقعها العين. تمتمت قائلة في صوتٍ خفيض لا يكاد يسمع: • إن علِّتي لعسيرة تستعصي على الشفاء، ما هذا الشعور الذي يكاد يقتلني؟ .. أهبط عليَّ من السماء .. أم صعد إليّ من أعماق الأرض!!! نهضت واقفةً واتجهت صوب جهاز التكييف تديره، وعادت تستقبل هواءه البارد المنعش وهي جالسة على ذات الأريكة، أخذت نفساً عميقاً تملأ به رئتيها، علّها بذلك تطفئ هذه النار المضرمة في صدرها. سمعت طرقاً خفيفاً على باب الغرفة، التفتت نحوه في ضجر، وقالت: • أدخلي يا عائشة ..
