يتضمن الكتاب سلسلة من "حوارات الحضارات" التي تمت على مدى عدة سنوات بين دايساكو إيكيدا, ومجيد طهرانيان باعتبار أن الأول يمثل الحضارة البوذية, بينما يمثل الثاني الحضارة الإسلامية. وقد تمت تلك الحوارات على مدى عدة سنوات تمت خلال التسعينيات وانتهت قبل أحداث سبتمبر سنة 2001, وإن كان المتحاوران قد حرصا في نهاية الكتاب على التأكيد أن تلك الأحداث تثبت صحة مقولة الحوار بين الحضارات. وقد قسم المتحاوران الكتاب إلى أحد عشر فصلًا تبدأ من الحوار حول وظيفة الحوار وتنتهي بنداء لكل الحضارات بأن تختار الحوار. وفيما بين الفصلين دخل المتحاوران في سلسلة ممتعة من المناقشات حول مختلف القضايا المعاصرة متطرقين إلى أهم الأفكار العلمية والفلسفية الكبرى في عالمنا المعاصر وأهم إسهاماتها.
وقد حدد المتحاوران هدفهما بأنه المساهمة في بناء "حضارة عالمية تنبني على الحضارات العالمية السابقة", وبالتحديد إيجاد وبلورة ما هو مشترك بين الديانتين البوذية (وبالذات بوذية نيشيرين التي يؤمن بها إيكيدا) والإسلامية (وبالذات المذاهب الصوفية الروحانية التي يميل إليها طهرانيان). ولكن الحوار لم يقتصر على ما هو مشترك بين الديانتين, ولكنه شمل كيف ترى البوذية والإسلام القضايا المعاصرة, مثل العولمة, وبناء السلام, ومكافحة الفقر وغيرها, مع تحديد الأدوات اللازمة للوصول إلى عالم يتسم بالحوار بين الحضارات.
