موضوع هذا البحث على امتداده في الزمن، وتوغله في القدم جديد، جديد لأنه يمثل اللغة في شكلها الإبداعي والفني، وجديد لأنه موضع تفاخر الناس جميعاً قدماء ومحدثين أدباء ونقاد ومتكلمين، حتى صار موضوع جدل ومناقشة مدناً متطاولة. وفي هذا الكتاب يطل الباحث على اللغة من نافذة كبرى بحيث يراها بناءً حيّاً متكاملاً، تتجسد فيه القوانين. قوانين البناء وقوانين الجمال حتى ليخيل إليك أنك أمام جوقة موسيقية مثيرة للإعجاب. وهدف المؤلف من وراء هذا البحث التعرف إلى قوانين اللغة بعامة، وقوانين المجاز بخاصة، ويهدف أيضاً إلى التعرف على وظائف هذه القوانين من جهتي الحقيقة والمجاز في البناء اللغوي، كما يحاول أن يتتبع ظاهرة التجوّز فيه؛ ليكشف عن حقيقة مؤداها أن التجوز بأشكاله المتعددة، وأنواعه المختلفة لا يكون إلا في إطار أنظمة اللغة ولا يخرج عنها بأي حال من الأحوال. إن البحث في قوانين اللغة من جهتي الحقيقة والمجاز على جدّته فيه ما فيه من الصعوبة والمشقة، ولكن ما يهوّن الأمر ويخفف العبء هو ما نجده في هذا البحث من المنفعة والمتعة ما يتناسب والجهد المبذول فيه.
