اختار جوي أورتون أن ينظر خلفه في سخرية إلى دراما حجرة الجلوس، محددًا تقاليدها من جديد في المنظور المكتسب منذ أن تخلى عنها الذوق النقدي، بل أكثر من هذا، فكلما أصر برناند شو على إعادة خلق الميلودراما ومسرحيات المشكلة حسب تصوره الخاص، هكذا فعل أورتون في "الغنيمة" إذ استعمل الطرق التقليدية وسخر منها في نفس الوقت. تلك التقاليد المدعومة ذاتيا، والتي يرسخها جوي أورتون في مسرحية " الغنيمة" هي: الموت والسرقة بالإكراه والدين وتقلب العلاقات الجنسية. إن الملائمة السطحية للشخصيات والمشاهد عند أورتون هي باختصار المعيار الذي ضربهم به. إن الحريات التي أعيد تأكيدها في " الغنيمة"تبدو ظاهرة على نحو مباشر، ولكنها حيوية على الرغم من ذلك. والحقيقة أن صلاحية الأشكال المختلفة يجب الاعتراف بها بدقة شديدة لأن ملاءمة الشكل أخفت ذلك عن الأنظار.
