ينتظم الكتاب ثلاث محاضرات ألقاها سارتون سنة 1954، قبل وفاته بعامين، وأتخذ لها موضوعاً: "صلة العلم القديم بالمدينة الحديثة"، فالمدينة الحديثة مركزها العلم الحديث، وما العلم الحديث إلا إمتداد للعلم القديم. وإذن فى دراستنا هذا الأخير ما يعيننا على تفهم الماضى الذى صدرنا عنه، والحاضر الذى أقمناه عليه. ويمضى سارتون إلى بيان هذه القضية فى طريقين، فهو من ناحية يدلنا على أن كثيراً من النتائج التى توصل إليها القدماء لا تزال محتفظة بصحتها وأهميتها، وقد كان بعضها مصدر إلهام للمحدثين فى مكتشفاتهم.
ومن ناحية أخرى يطلعنا سارتون على تاريخ المؤلفات القديمة المهمة فى العصور الوسطى الإسلامية حتى انتقالها فيما بعد إلى أوروبا فى ترجمات لاتينية منقولة فى الأكثر عن العربية، وهو بذلك يضرب المثل على اتصال الحديث بالقديم، وانطباع الروح العلمية بطابع عالمى لا يميز بين أجناس وشعوب.
