في أحضان الأرض الصلبة المنحوتة من آلاف السنين التى يجرى عبرها نهر النيل نرى على خريطة مصر كلمة " الصعيد" بما تحمل من إيحاءات تتراوح بين الصلابة و الأصالة والعناد الذى يأتى أن ينحنى مهما كانت المسلمات .. عن هذا العالم الخاص الذى نجح فى أن يحتفظ بكيانه دون أن يذوب فيما عليه يرد من ثقافات ومتغيرات كتب العديد من الروائيين وخرجت الكثير من القصص التى ترجمت لأعمال درامية وسينمائية ولكن ما يدعو للأسف هو أنها لم تكن إلا صورة لا علاقة لها بالواقع الحقيقى بدءاً من للهجة وحتى العادات والتقاليد. وهو مالم تقع فيه الرواية التى بين أيدينا، حيث نجح " ماهر مقلد" فى نقل تفاصيل هذا العالم وهو أحد أبناء الصعيد - من ناجح وإسماعيل وأحمد أفندى ومبروكة وغيرهم من أشخاص نجح فى تصويرها كل داخل إطاره وكلهم داخل أحداث مترابطة فنجده يمزج بين الماضى والحاضر بالأحداث الجارية والذكريات الماضية، وكذلك يمزج بين عالم القرية الصعيدية وبعض من نسمات القاهرة ليصنع رواية تتحدث عن مصر عاصمتها وقريتها.. شمالها وجنوبها، وكما أن " الشيخ وحشى" فى القرية جمع حول ضريحة الزوار والمحبين من النساء والرجال والأطفال فعلتها روايته التى تحوذ إعجاب وحب كل من قرأها.
