ازدهر التأليف في علوم العربية في القرن الرابع الهجري؛ فقد نضجت فيه علوم اللغة وأينعت ثمارها، ومن أعلام هذه المرحلة أبو علي الحسن بن أحمد بن عبد الغفار الفارسي وتلميذه أبو الفتح عثمان بن جني الموصلي، صاحب التصانيف الفريدة في علوم العربية صرفها ونحوها وفقهها، ومن مصنفاته التي كتب لها الخلود كتاب اللمع، ذو الشهرة الواسعة لدى أهل النحو؛ فقد اتسم بالاختصار والوضوح، وكان مادة للتدريس والبحث قروناً، وخدم بشروح كثيرة خرج الى النور بعضها، وما زال بعضها الآخر حبيس خزائن المخطوطات، واليوم يخرج إلى القراء شرح تميز بمنهجه ونقله عن كتب مفقودة أو ما في حكمها؛ هو شرح اللمع للشريف عمر بن إبراهيم الزيدي الحسيني الكوفي أحد علماء القرنين الرابع و الخامس، الذين تلقوا النحو عن أبي القاسم زيد بن علي بن عبد الله الفارسي شارح الإيضاح، عن أبي الحسين محمد بن الحسين بن محمد بن عبد الوارث الفارسي، عن خاله أبي علي الحسن بن أحمد بن عبد الغفار الفارسي.
