الكتاب من ترجمة وتحقيق أبو عبد الرحمن محمود. يأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن سلسلة "التقريب لمصنفات الخطيب" البغدادي وفيه تهذيب وتحقيق لكتاب "اقتضاء العلم والعمل" وبالعودة لمضمون هذا الكتاب نجد أنه حوى أبواباً تحدث فيها المصنف عن: التغليظ على من ترك العمل بالعلم وعدل إلى صدّه وخلاف مقتضاه في الحكم؛ ذم طلب العلم للمباهاة والمماراة فيه ونيل الأغراض وأخذ الأعراض عليه، الوعيد والتهيد والتشديد لمن قرأ القرآن للصيت والذكر، ولم يقرأ، للعمل به واكتساب الأجر..، ما قيل في حفظ حروفه وتضييع حدوده، ذم التفقه لغير العبادة؛ كراهية طلب الحديث للمفاخرة وعقد المجالس واتخاذ الأتباع والأصحاب بروايته، كره تعلّم النحو لما يكسب من الخيلاء والزهو، الأخذ بالوثيقة في أمر الآخرة، الأعمال هي الزاد والذخيرة النافعة يوم المعاد، اغتنام الشبيبة والصحة والفراغ والمبادرة إلى الأعمال قبل حدوث ما يقطع عنها، ذم التسويف!
