لم ينته ذلك الصباح الذي سكنت فيه رائحة الجثة جدران البيت، وخيل إلينا أننا يجب أن نرحل من هنا، فقد أفسد الرجل الميت حياتنا لأسبوع كامل، وغدونا ننظر في وجوه بعضنا على مضض، وفي العصر- بعد يومين- طلب مني مفتاح شقة الدور الثاني، تطلعت في وجهه وتساءلت: لماذا يريد أن يأخذ المفتاح ويذهب إلى تلك البشاعة التي أكلت الرجل وستفسد البيت إلى أن يجئ الوقت الذي ننسى فيه هذا الموت ونعود لنحكيه كقصص لم تحدث لنا؟ إن المؤلف فيما حدث ليس الموت وإنما تلك الروح التي علقت على السلالم، والدرابزين، وأبواب الشقق، وشراعات النوافذ، والمناور، ودخلت تلك الأماكن التي يسكنها ناس طيبون. فمن الصعب على أم حامد وهي تغسل السلم يوم الجمعة أن تمحو هذا الأثر الذي يبدو أنه سكن التفاصيل اللامرئية للمبنى. الشمس تترك شرفة المطبخ وتزحف في مربع مكسور أمام الحمام، يختمر لون البلاط اللامع المغسول في رائحة البيت الطيب الذي أخرج رجالاً طيبين من تحت هذا الضوء المسائي والنظام الدائم كالأيام: نظام تبديل الملاءات يوم الجمعة، نظام مواقيت الصلاة على سجاجيد من قطيفة، ورنين صوت الأب بقواعد اللغة العربية في أركان البيت.
