في هذه الرواية يتألق الكاتب الفرنسي المعاصر بيير ميشون الذي ينتمي لجيل الكتابة الجديدة في فرنسا ، شأنه في رواياته الاخرى"امبراطور الغرب"،"أسياد وعبيد" ، وقد أثار اهتمامه بكتابة السيرة الذاتية الأجيال السابقة عليه حتى أن الروائي والناقد الفرنسي فانسان كولونا كتب قائلا : ربما من الصعب أن نحمل أحكاما عامة، علينا أن نفند ذلك حالة إثر أخرى: حين تكتب ساروت أدبا ذاتيا، وحين يكتب كلود سيمون أدبا مماثلا فإنني أجد الأمر على كثير من الأهمية. لكن هناك حالات أخرى، إذ مع الكتاب الشبان فإنني أجد أن ثمة حالة من الاستسهال لأن ذلك، أولا، يعجب الجمهور حاليا، كما أنه من الأسهل علينا كتابة هذا، ليس من المفروض علينا عندها أن <نكسر رؤوسنا> لنخترع قصة وشخصيات ومواقف، كلّ هذا يبدو معقدا ويتطلب الكثير من العمل فيما لو أردنا القيام به بشكل جدي. وبما أن القارئ يطلب ذلك، فإن العديد من الكتاب يغرقون في هذا الأمر وما يجعلهم يكتبون أكثر من كتاب في العام. رواية "حيوات صغيرة" تتضمن مجموعة من العناوين الداخلية هي : حياة أندريه ديفورنو ، حياة أندريه أنطوان بولوشيه ، حياة أوجين وحياة كلارا ، حياة الأخوين بكروت ، حياة الأب فوكو ، حياة جورج باندي ، حياة كلوديت ، حياة الطفلة الميتة .
