علم الطبقات هو ذلك الفرع من علوم الأرض الذي يهتم بدراسة الصخور المطبقة (Stratified Roks)، أي تلك التي بشكل طبقات. وتدرس تلك الصخور من ناحية طريقة تكوينها (بما فيها بيئة الترسيب) وتوزعها الجغرافي (الأفقي)، والزمني (العمودي) وتعاقبها وعمرها ومضاهاتها الواحدة بالأخرى (Correlation). إضافة إلى تقسيمها إلى وحدات طباقية. وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يدور حول هذا العلم وقد توخى المؤلف في إعداده أن تكون فصوله ومواضيعه متطابقة مع المفردات المقررة لمادة الطبقية لطلبة الصف الثالث في الجامعات العراقية. وقد استند في إعداد فصوله على المصدر المعروف للمهتمين (Stratigraphy and Sedimentation). وركز على المواضيع ذات العلاقة بعلم الطبقات فقط واستبعد المواضيع ذات العلاقة بعلم الترسيب (Sedimentation) لا لعدم أهمية أو ترابط هذه المادة مع علم الطبقات ولكن لأن "مادة الترسيبية" مادة مقررة تدرس كموضوع مستقل وذلك لأهميته... كما تطرق إلى مواضيع ذات علاقة بفروع أخرى في علم الأرض كالعمل الحقلي أو السجلات الكهربائية. أما النشريات الرئيسية الأخرى التي استند إليها في الإعداد التي صدرت من "اللجنة الفرعية العالمية للتسمية الطباقية" والتي تختصر إلى (ISSN) تناولت أصناف الوحدات الطباقية، وهي مدونة في نهاية الكتاب ضمن المصادر المعتمدة وهذه التقارير تعد مهمة وضرورية بالنسبة للطلاب والباحثين المهتمين بعلم الطبقات. وما يميز هذه الدراسة أنها تحتوي على رسومات بيانية خاصة بموضع الدراسة.
