وهكذا تقلّص الحلم لدى أحفاد جلجامش من العيش الأبدي لدى جدهم إلى الحلم بالعيش لأطول فترة ممكنة بأفضل قواهم العقلية وبأقل مستوى من الآلام التي ترافق الإنسان في نهاية عمره. فهذا البحث الدؤوب عن رقية أو شعوذة أو دواء لإبعاد خطر المرض أو الموت الداهم إلا رغبة جامحة نحو عيش أطول مهما قدمنا من الأعذار الأخرى؟
إذاً هل يشكل البحث عن إكسير الشباب وأبعاد الشيخوخة أو محاولة تأجيلها في وقتنا الراهن جهداً عبثياً لا طائل منه؟ كيف تداهمنا الشيخوخة وما هي الآليات التي تؤدي إلى ذلك؟ لماذا يعيش بعضنا أكثر من الآخر؟ هل السبب في اختلاف موروثاتنا أم في اختلاف استعداداتنا إزاء تحمل تلوث البيئة والإجهادات الأخرى التي تسببها حضارتنا المعاصرة؟
