إن متن (دليل الطالب لنيل المطالب) للإمام العلامة مرعي بن يوســف الكـرمي مؤلَّف بديـع، ومصنَّف رفيـع، ســهل العـبارة إلا أنه الممتنع، بديع الإشارة إلا أنه الرحب المتسع، أوجز وما أخل، وأطنب وما أمل. وقد شرط فيه ـ رحمه الله ـ أن لا يذكر إلا ما جزم بصحته أهل التصحيح والعرفان، وعليه الفتوى بين أهل الترجيح والإتقان. ولقد كان الأوائل من طلبة العلم يفضلون أن يبدأ طالب العلم بحفظ متن الدليل؛ لوضـوح عبارتـه، وســهولة حفظه، وينشـدون لذلك: يا مَنْ يريد لفقهه في الدين خير مطالب اقرأ لشرح المنتهى واحفظ دليل الطالب وقد أثنى عليه جمٌّ من العلماء والأفاضل، واعتنَوا به شرحاً ونظماً وتَحْشِيةً، وكان للشيخ الإمام العلامة الفاضل مصطفى الدوماني الدمشقي، إمام رواق الحنابلة بالجامع الأزهر، حاشيةٌ جليلةٌ لطيفةٌ، أوضح فيها ما أُبهم، وقرَّر كثيراً من المسائل، وأفصح عن كثير من الجواهر، وكشف عن بدائعَ منثورة انتخَبها من تقاريرَ مهمَّة للشيخ عثمان بن أحمد الفُتوحي حفيد صاحب ’منتهى الإرادات‘، والشيخ الصَّوالحيِّ، والشيخ يوسف مما كتبوه على (دليل الطالب). وضمَّ إليها أبحاثاً لطيفةً مُنتخبةً من كلامِ المتقدِّمين من أمثال الإمام ابنِ قُدامةَ في (المغني)، وابن مُفْلح في (الفروع)، والفُتوحيِّ، وابنِ قُنْدُس، ومن المتأخِّرين من أمثالِ الشيخ مَنصورٍ البُهُوتيِّ، وعثمانَ النَّجدي، ومرعيِّ الكَرميِّ، وغيرهم.
