لقد استفاق الشرق الإسلامي في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر من غفوته التي طالت ردحاً من الزمن، ففوجئ بالهوة السحيقة بين عالم الغرب الذي قطع أشواطاً بعيدة في التقدم العلمي والصناعي وبين ما عليه الشرق المسلم من تخلف وجمود أطبقا على نواحي الحياة كلها، فراح المثقفون يبحثون عن السبيل الذي يجعل الأمة تنهض من كبوتها وتلحق بالدول الغربية في تقدمها. لقد وقع أكثر مثقفي الشرق في دائرة الانبهار بعظمة التقدم العلمي في الغرب، مما عطل لديهم منهج التفكير الحر المستقل فأصبحوا متلقين لمقولات الغرب المعبرة عن قيمه ومفاهيمه دون تفكير أو تحليل أو نقد. لقد أدرك الغرب هذا الشلل الذي أصبح الشرق أسيراً له، فاستغل كل وسائل الإعلام والثقافة ليصدر للشرق مقولة زائفة تدعي أن هذا التخلف مرتبط بالدين الإسلامي. هذه الهجمة الشرسة تهدف إلى تشويه الهوية الإسلامية، ومع الأسف فقد حققت أغراضها فانسلخ كثير من المثقفين عن هويتهم الإسلامية، وتمثلوا مقولات الغرب وقيمه وأفكاره، وتبوؤوا مراكز الثقافة والإعلام والتربية والتعليم، فسعوا أكثر من الغرب نحو سلخ المجتمعات عن هويتها الإسلامية. لم تخل الساحة في العالم الإسلامي من المفكرين اليقظين الذين أدركوا خطورة هذه الهجمة الغربية على الإسلام، فأخرجوه من قفص الاتهام الذي وضعه فيه الغرب. ومن هذه الساحة برز المؤلف بحواريته الإسلامية المتميزة لينير الطريق أمام الشباب المسلم، مبيناً لهم صلاح هويتهم الإسلامية في كل زمان ومكان.
