إن البشر لما رأى الكون في جماله وتحولاته ونظامه أخذ قهراً في التساؤل والتفكير عن كيفية نشأته، وعن أصله ومادته، وعن خالقه وعلته. وعندئذ واجه وجوهاً محتملة متضادة تنبثق منها نقطة الانطلاق للبحث.
ونشأت لذلك طائفتين متخاصمتين: الفلاسفة الماديين والفلاسفة الروحيين. وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا لم يكن كتاباً يشتمل كافة آراء هؤلاء الفلاسفة وإنما هو يتكفل بيان آراء طائفة من الفلاسفة الماديون الذين زعموا أن أصل العالم من الذرات المتفرقة، لا كل آرائهم المتعلقة في الكون وفي المجتمع وفي الأخلاق، بل يبحث في الآراء الخاصة التي صدرت حول الذرة والحركة اللتين شكلتا مركز النزاع بين الماديين والميتافيزيقيين، فهي تبين آراء هؤلاء الفلاسفة قديماً وحديثاً مقرونة بالتحليل والنظر والنظر الدقيق حول كل رأي. وسوف يتبع المؤلف المراحل التي مرت الفلسفة بها خلال العصور في ترتيبها الطبيعي بالتتابع الأولى ثم الثانية ثم الثالثة مع ملاحظات المؤلف الفلسفية حولها.
