تراجم الشعراء فن قديم في تاريخ الأدب العربي، وفيه مؤلفات في غاية الفخامة والجودة. أما هذا المعجم فخاص بالرَجَاز، وقد ارتأينا أن يكون معيارنا في إعداده وإختيار مادته –وهم الرَجَاز- أن يتوافر على من وردت ترجمته واحد من الشروط التالية:
الأول- أن يكون راجزا، شهر وعرف بأنه من الرَجَاز، ومعلوم أن الرَجَاز اسم يطلق على طائفة من الشعراء اختصت بقول الرَجَز وعرفت به. الثاني –من عرف بأنه شاعر راجز. الثالث –من لم ترو عنه سوى الأراجيز.
والمعجم يترجم لطائفة لها خطرها وأثرها البالغ في الدرس اللغوي، أدبا ونحوا... وهم الرَجَاز، حيث تفتقر المكتبة الأدبية لمؤلف مطبوع مفرد لهذه الطائفة. وقد سعينا في تتبع الرَجز والرَجَاز منذ العهد الجاهلي حنى العهد العباسي، فحوى المعجم طائفة من الرَجَاز قاربت مئة راجز، كما احتوى المعجم على قطع صالحة من الأراجيز على امتداد تأريخ الأدب العربي، جاهليَة وإسلاميَة. وسيلاحظ القارئ أنَا لم نسلك سبيل المتأخرين ممن ألَفوا في معاجم الشعراء إذ يلتزمون منهجاً واحداً في إيرادهم لتراجم الشعراء فيكتفون بذكر اسم الشاعر ونسبه وعصره ونتف من أخباره، ثم يذكرون مصادر ترجمته، وهو منهج جيد لا غبار عليه، ولكنه سلكنا منهج المتقدمين – سيما أنَ التأليف في الرَجَز والرَجَاز نادر- فالمتقدمون لا يلتزمون منهجاً واحداً، وهذا ما فعلناه، فقد نطول ترجمة راجز وقد تقصر ترجمة آخر، وكذلك الحال بالنسبة لنماذج الرّجز، ويتحكم في هذا وذاك توافر المصادر أو قلتها وشهرة الراجز أو خموله، وندرة الرّجز أو ذيوعه.
كما اشتمل هذا المعجم على بعض المباحث عن أصل الرَجز ومصادره وكثرته وعلاقته بالقصيد.
