تعتبر كتاب التاو-تي-تشنغ أكثر كتب الديانة انتشاراً كما أنه أكثرها عالمية. ويعود هذا الكتاب حسب التوقعات إلى السنة 500 أو 300 قبل الميلاد فلم يتوصل المتخصصون في هذا المجال إلى تأريخ الكتاب بشكل محدد ودقيق ومع أن هذا الكتاب منسوب إلى لاو-تسو وهو من مؤسسي الديانة إلا أنه من الصعب القول أن بدأ واحدة قد خطت سطور هذا الكتاب ولكن على جميع الأحوال يعتبر التاوتي شنغ من أقدم مراجع التاو ونظرياتها. أما الكتاب الذي بين يديكم فيحتوي على مختارات من التعاليم الكلاسيكية لهذا المعتقد وبالتالي يضم ترجمة لأكبر كمية من كلاسيكيات فلسفة تعاليم التاو إضافة إلى ترجمة للقصص التاوية وأخرى "لقصص المعنى الداخلي" ومجموعة من التعاليم القصيرة للفيلسوف "لو" وهو من أعظم أعلام التاوية.
