بعد أن انتهيت من إعداد الطبعة الأولى من كتابي "شوارع لها تاريخ" في مارس 1996م، كان لزاماً عليّ أن اصدر كتاباً عن تاريخ إنشاء مدينة القاهرة، ومراحل تطورها، إلى أن أصبحت على ما هي عليه في أول القرن الواحد والعشرين.. خصوصاً وأن كثيرين من المؤرخين لم يقتربوا كثيراُ من هذا النوع، الذي يؤرخ لنشأة العاصمة المصرية تاريخياً ومعمارياً.. تخطيطياً وبشرياً بالتفصيل الذي يروي غلة القارئ، بل والباحث أيضاً، ولم يقترب أحد-كثيراً- بالبحث عن أصول أحياء القاهرة ونشأتها وكيف ظهرت وكيف تطورت هذه الأحياء..
وبقيت حوالي 6 سنوات أنقب وابحث وأجمع كلمة من هنا وسطراً من هناك وأدقق في كل ما أجد، لكي اقدم كتاباً دقيقاً ومدققاً ليصبح مرجعاً شاملاً عن نشأة القاهرة، وعن تاريخ أحيائها القديمة والحديثة، لمن شاء أن يعرف أصل هذه المدينة التي سلبت ألباب المثقفين والمستشرقين الأجانب، أكثر مما سلبت ألباب المثقفين العرب.
وقرأت معظم الكتب القديمة والوسيطة والحديثة، التي تحدثت عن القاهرة، ووجدت بحراً زاخراً، ولكن بأسلوب تقديم لا يقبل عليه قارئ القرن الواحد والعشرين. ثم كان علي أن أرفض أي معلومة، أو أي رواية غير موثوق بها. لقد أردت كتاباً بلغة عصرية يقدم المعلومة والمعرفة.. الحقيقة والطرفة بعيداً عن الخرافات، لكل من يسكن بالمحروسة أو يمر بها أو يحبها.
