لعب المصنع دوراً رئيساً في الحضارة الأوروبية والأمريكية في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر وصولاً إلى القرن الحادي والعشرين. فقد ازداد الاعتماد على الآلة والطاقة الكهربائية في تشغيل آلاف المصانع التي كانت عماد الثورة الصناعية الأوروبية، وشهدت المصانع تطورات سريعة ومؤثرة سواء في التقنية التي تستخدمها أو في نوعية إنتاجها. وفي كتاب «المصنع» تستعرض الكاتبة جيليان دارلي تاريخ هذا الكيان الفريد من نواح عدة شملت العمارة والهندسة والتشغيل والإنتاج، وكيف تطور عبر العصور على ضفتي الأطلسي، فتتحدث عن بداية خط الإنتاج في مصانع فورد الأمريكية وكيف انتقل إلى المصانع الأوروبية، كما تتطرق إلى العديد من النواحي الهندسية والعملية التي رافقت تطور المصانع. وتشرح الكاتبة بشيء من التفصيل العلاقة بين المصنع والعمال وأرباب العمل، وتقارن بين ظروف العمل المجحفة التي كانت سائدة في العصر الفكتوري والتغيرات التي طرأت عليها فيما بعد، كما تصف ظروف العمل والبيئة المحيطة بالمصنع الحديث وتأثير فن العمارة في نشر الدعاية المجانية لمنتجاته. وتورد دارلي وصفاً مفصلاً للإنشاءات الهندسية التي أسهمت في تطوير بناء المصنع، والتي أدت إلى الاستغناء عن الأعمدة والجسور الخرسانية بفضل تقنية الأقواس والأعمدة الشجرية التي أتاحت مساحة أكبر في أرضية المعمل، ثم تبين كيف تمت الاستفادة من الضوء الطبيعي الذي يسقط على أرضية المصنع من نوافذ علوية في السقف بعد نجاح أسلوب أسنان المنشار في صنع السقوف.
