تفترض نظرية الذكاءات المتعددة التي أعدها هاوارد جاردنر Howard Gardner والتي تعتبر إحدى نظريات الموهبة أو نماذجها الحديثة أن هناك أنماطاً أساسية للذكاءات بدأت بسبعة أنماط وانتهت بتسعة، ومن هذا المنطلق فهي لا تعترف بالقدرات من ناحية، ولا بنسبة الذكاء من ناحية أخرى، ولكنها بدلاً من ذلك استبدلت القدرات بالذكاءات وتعاملت معها على أنها مستقلة. ومع أن الدراسات الحديثة قد أثبتت ما ذهب إليه علماء النفس من بدايات القرن الماضي من أن المسألة لا تعدو أن تكون ذكاءات، بل أنها في الواقع ما هي إلا قدرات، وأنها تتشبع على عامل عام واحد هو الذكاء، ومن المعروف أن هذا الاختلاف والتفاوت قد أدى بمصطلح الذكاء إلى أن يمر بإعادة هيكلة في الوقت الراهن فإن أهميتها كنظرة في هذا الإطار لا يمكن لأحد أن يتجاهلها وهو ما نوضحه عن تناول الهدف من هذه القائمة.
وإذا كان الأمر كذلك فإن هذا من شأنه أن يثير العديد من الأسئلة الأساسية التي ينبغي أن نوضحها منذ البداية ونوضح إجاباتها أيضاً، ومن أهم هذه الأسئلة أنه إذا كنا سنعود إلى القدرات من جديد، وإذا كانت المسألة هي مسألة قدرات وليست ذكاءات، وإذا كنا سنعود إلى نسبة الذكاء وهو ما سيجعلها تحتل نفس أهميتها السابقة فلماذا إذن نصر على تقديم هذه القائمة رغم ذلك؟
