يعنى هذا الكتاب بالبحث في ممارسات العنف التي انتشرت في عصرنا الراهن، وفي الدوافع الثقافية التي تقف وراءها. ويتطرق إلى طبيعة العلاقة بين هذه الممارسات وظاهرة العولمة باعتبارها أسلوبا صارت تُنظَّم من خلاله الدّول والأسواق والأفكار. فهو يعرض كيف أن العولمة تزيد في إثارة الارتياب حول الحد الفاصل بين 'النحن' و'الآخر'، وتولّد بواعث جديدة للعنف الجماعي، وتقوّض حدود ونفوذ الدولة-الأمة. فنحن نعيش اليوم في عالم يتسم بغزارة إنتاج العنف وظهور أنماط جديدة من التنظيمات السياسية التي لا تحتكم للقوانين التقليدية للسياسات والدول. عالم يملأه الارتياب والشعور بعدم الاكتمال، ويغلب عليه الخوف والغضب تجاه قوى السوق والسياسة، ولكن أيضا تجاه الأقليات التي لم تمنعها أعدادها الصغيرة التي تستمد منها أبلغ معانيها من أن تكون موضوع خشية أو غضب. وقد تُطرح مسألة الغضب تجاه المجموعات الصغيرة العدد في أي حقبة من التاريخ، ولكني أود طرحها في إطار العولمة الذي ارتبطت فيه الأحداث بخطاب الإرهاب، ونُسجت خلاله علاقات جديدة تربط السياسات الوطنية والتحالفات الدولية والتوترات الإقليمية لترسم خرائط جديدة وتُشكّل تضاريس جغرافية الغضب.
